What are Warts?
Warts are growths that occur on the skin as a result of infection. They are more specifically caused by a viral infection from certain strains of the human papillomavirus (HPV). HPV is extremely common, and you come into contact with it virtually every day, but some kinds can infect the skin through small scratches or cuts and cause a wart to form. Warts are generally harmless, but they should be treated by a dermatologist before they spread to other areas of the body or other people.
What Are the Symptoms of Warts?
Warts don’t usually improve on their own. People who are most likely to get warts are those with weakened immune systems (like children) or people who bite or pick at their fingers and nails. This can cause many different openings in the skin through which HPV can enter.
- Raised, rough bumps
- Small dots or “seeds” on the skin
- Colorless
- Rapid growth
- Clusters
What Are My Treatment Options?
Warts are easily treated with the help of your dermatologist. In some cases, your dermatologist can prescribe medications to use at home. In other cases, your dermatologist can remove them through a quick, in-office appointment. This might include techniques like cryotherapy, excision, or other removal methods. In some cases, warts can be the result of cancerous activity so your dermatologist will determine whether a biopsy is needed. If you’re prone to warts because you’re immunocompromised, your dermatologist can recommend ways to boost your immune system and help your body fight off new infections.

How Do I Take Care of My Skin After Wart Removal?
You may be given instructions to follow after your removal process and you should follow these as best as possible. It’s important to prevent warts from forming in the future, so make sure to get in the habit of practicing good hygiene like washing your hands regularly, keeping cuts and scratches covered, and wearing shoes in public places. Warts can also form in moist environments, so make sure to keep your feet dry.
