What Causes Skin Cancer?
Skin cancer is caused by exposure from UV rays. Over time, exposure to UV rays can damage the structure of your skin’s cells, causing them to grow out of control and form growths on the skin. These cancerous cells can spread throughout the body, becoming fatal if not treated promptly.
You can develop skin cancer from sun exposure (having 5 or more sunburns doubles your risk for melanoma, according to the Skin Cancer Foundation) or from tanning. In fact, more people develop skin cancer from tanning beds than people develop lung cancer from smoking. If you regularly tan (even once can increase your risk of squamous cell carcinoma by 83%) or spend extended amounts of time in the sun, your risk for skin cancer can be much higher than normal.
What are the Types of Skin Cancer?
There are three main types of skin cancer. They can all present differently, and it’s important to know what to look for when performing a skin self-check.
Melanoma
This is the most well-known type of skin cancer, but it’s also the deadliest. It can develop from existing moles or present as a new one. It’s easily detectable with a yearly screening with your dermatologist or by keeping track of your existing moles to detect changes.
Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC)
This is the most common type of skin cancer, and it typically develops on the head, neck, and arms (where you might have the most sun exposure). It tends to look like a skin-colored bump that is pink or pearlescent.
Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC)
This type of skin cancer can easily be mistaken for a sore that heals and re-opens. It may feel firm, bumpy, or scaly, and forms on areas that experience a lot of sun exposure like the ears, face, neck, and torso.
