Maintenance Steps
Taking care of your skin after skin cancer treatment is one of the most important steps of your process. Your aftercare steps will be different based on your unique treatment plan, so make sure to follow directions.
- Keep the area clean with soapy water and gently pat dry
- Don’t soak the wound – shower instead until it’s healed
- Apply an antibiotic ointment and keep it covered with a bandage
- Keep the wound moist with silicone treatments or Vaseline to prevent scarring
- Check in with your dermatologist if you notice any symptoms like redness, swelling, or sensitivity
Preventing Skin Cancer
If you go through skin cancer treatment, it’s extremely important to prevent skin cancer from reoccurring. Make sure to meet with your dermatologist regularly for a skin check and track your moles and skin spots at home. Your dermatologist can give you the best idea of how often to check your skin at home and in our office.
The best way to prevent skin cancer is to wear sunscreen. Make sure to wear SPF 30+ every day and avoid sunlight at the hottest parts of the day. Make sure to also wear items like hats, sunglasses, and UV protective clothing. Your chances of developing skin cancer go up every time you experience a sunburn, so taking steps to prevent sun damage is the best way to mitigate your risk of skin cancer. If you normally visit tanning booths or tan outdoors, stop right away.
