What is Psoriasis?

Psoriasis is a skin condition that forms itchy, scaly patches on the skin. These patches can occur as flare-ups, which then subside for a time. There are different types of psoriasis that can affect different areas of the body like the knees, elbows, hands, feet, neck, back, and scalp.

Psoriasis is thought to be caused by the immune system malfunctioning and causing a rapid turnover of skin cells. The underlying cause of this isn’t well understood, however. Psoriasis is not contagious, but you may be more likely to have it if you have family members with psoriasis.

Certain things may trigger psoriasis, like:

  • Infections
  • Cold, dry conditions
  • Stress
  • Cuts and scrapes
  • Smoking and alcohol
  • Medications

What Are the Symptoms of Psoriasis?

Psoriasis can affect only a few areas of the skin or it can erupt into outbreaks over large areas. It can flare up for a few months and then go away, depending on the type.

There are many different manifestations of psoriasis, but it’s generally characterized as:

  • Red patches
  • Thick, whitish scales
  • Dry and cracked skin
  • Itchiness
  • Soreness or sensitivity
  • Swelling
  • Stiff joints
  • Thick, ridged, or pitted nails

What Are My Treatment Options?

There is no cure for psoriasis, but your board-certified dermatologist can help you find ways to manage your flare-ups and prevent future ones. There are prescription topical medications that can help reduce symptoms of psoriasis and soothe discomfort. Your dermatologist can help you determine your triggers and how to avoid them in combination with medications and other treatment options.
