What are Moles?
Moles are clusters of pigmented cells that randomly form on the skin, usually when you’re young. These cells are called melanocytes, and they typically give your skin its pigment. Because of this, moles are usually darker in color, like brown or black. Moles are extremely common, and virtually everyone has one on their skin. In most cases, moles are harmless but can develop into skin cancer and require removal. Mole removal can be performed by a board-certified dermatologist using a variety of techniques.
What Are the Characteristics of Moles?
Moles can be very small in size, or they can be noticeably large. Size does not necessarily mean they are cancerous, but if you have many large moles, you should have them checked regularly by your board-certified dermatologist.
- Black or brown in color
- Raised or flat
- Hairy or hairless
What Are My Treatment Options?
There are many different effective ways to treat moles. Your removal process may be different if your dermatologist detects cancerous activity.
Your dermatologist will make sure that your skin looks clear, and the removal process doesn’t leave behind visible scarring. If cancer is a concern, your dermatologist will discuss your next steps and how to keep your skin cancer-free in the future.
- Chemical peels
- Photofacials
- Surgical excision
- Shave removal
- Cryotherapy

How Do I Take Care of My Skin After Mole Removal?
Your dermatologist will give you detailed instructions on how to care for your mole removal site after your procedure. Your aftercare steps can look different depending on your removal process, so make sure to follow directions accordingly. It’s most important to protect your skin from sun exposure during your recovery and going forward, since this can help prevent further mole formation and cancerous activity. Wear SPF 30+ on your skin every day and avoid extended time outside during the middle of the day. Also make sure to wear protective clothing like hats and sunglasses. Finally, make sure to check any remaining moles for changes over time and report any concerns to your dermatologist.
