What is PRP?
PRP stands for Platelet-Rich Plasma. It’s a natural serum derived from your own blood sample, meaning it comes with few risks and no harsh ingredients. Your blood contains growth factors, which stimulate cellular regeneration in many different functions of the body. When they’re distilled into a concentrated serum, they can be injected or microneedled into the skin to stimulate cell turnover. The result is accelerated skin regrowth and a reduction in many different skin concerns.
What Can PRP Treat?
As a naturally derived serum, PRP can be used in a variety of treatments to help your body heal itself.
- Fine lines and aging
- Skin laxity
- Sagging
- Uneven complexion
- Acne scars
- Texture and dryness
PRP also has many other cosmetic and medical uses, including hair restoration and sports injury treatment. Because it uses your own blood sample, it’s important for your board-certified dermatologist to assess your health history and make sure you’re a good candidate for PRP.
What Happens During Treatment?
PRP treatment begins with taking a blood sample. The blood sample is placed within a centrifuge which spins the blood down into its components – most importantly, plasma rich in growth factors. This plasma is then injected or microneedled into the skin to boost its absorption. There, the growth factors begin to boost cellular turnover and stimulate the growth of new, healthy skin.

PRP Recovery and Results
Although you can return to your normal activities after PRP, it’s best to avoid exercise or hot environments for the first 24-48 hours. Your skincare specialist will give you detailed instructions on how best to wash your face and keep it moisturized. It’s extremely important to keep your treated skin covered with SPF 30+ and protected from sun damage and pigmentation.
It can take between three and six weeks to begin seeing results from your PRP treatment. Most patients benefit from a package of treatments performed two to three weeks apart. Once you achieve your skin goals, you can return for maintenance treatments every six months to one year.
