What is PRP for Hair Loss?
Hair loss can have many different causes, like genetics, autoimmune disorders, aging, stress, or pregnancy. It can be distressing and may even be long-term. Hereditary hair loss is one of the most common causes of baldness and can also affect women (although it’s more common in men).
PRP, or platelet-rich plasma, is one of the most promising hair loss treatments available. It works by creating a concentrated growth serum using a sample of your own blood. This serum is rich in growth factors which can jumpstart your follicles’ production of new hair. When microneedled into the scalp, it can both help prevent hair loss and stimulate new growth without surgery.
What Can PRP Hair Restoration Treat?
PRP hair restoration can be effective for many different types and stages of hair loss. This includes:
- Male pattern baldness
- Female pattern baldness
- Hair thinning
- Hair loss
- Hair growth after implants
Although it can seem like a cure for hair loss, PRP is most effective for patients who are in the beginning stages of hair loss, like hair thinning. It’s also most effective when combined with other medications like minoxidil. If you have complete hair loss or extensive bald spots, PRP may not be effective enough to regrow hair. Your board-certified dermatologist can help you determine what PRP can achieve for you during your consultation.
What Happens During Treatment?
PRP treatment begins with taking a sample of your own blood. This sample is placed within a specialized centrifuge which spins it down into its parts – including the plasma rich in growth factors. This plasma is then microneedled into the scalp using a specialized stamping handpiece. This allows the growth factors to penetrate deep into the skin where they can more effectively stimulate the hair follicles.

PRP Hair Restoration Recovery and Results
There’s no downtime required after PRP treatment, but your hair restoration specialist will give detailed instructions on caring for your scalp afterward and when you can return to washing your hair or wearing hats. It can take at least two to three months before beginning to see results after PRP treatment. This can also depend on subsequent treatments, since it works best as a package of treatments. You’ll begin to see best results at around six months and can return for maintenance treatments every six months to one year. Although PRP can help boost growth, it can also help prevent further hair loss.
