What are Acne Scars?
Acne scars are the result of breakouts, where inflammation damages the walls of the pore. When this happens, the body responds by generating new collagen. Sometimes, this collagen doesn’t create smooth, even-toned skin as it heals. The result is acne scars.
There are many different types of acne scars, and they can be difficult to get rid of with products or other conventional treatments. Some are textured and can cause pitted scars (called ice pick scars) in the skin. Dermal fillers are one way to fill in pockmark scars and create a smoother look. Treatments like IPL or chemical peels can be combined with fillers to address redness and achieve clearer skin.
What Can Acne Scar Treatment Treat?
Acne scars can appear in a few different ways, and therefore can require different types of treatment.
- Ice pick scars
- Boxcar scars
- Atrophic scars
- Depressed scars
Red or pigmented acne scars can’t be treated with fillers and will require other options like chemical peels or microneedling. If you have scars that are a mixture of pigment and texture, you may need a combination approach. Our skincare specialists can give you the best idea of what you can expect from acne scar treatment during your appointment.
What Happens During Treatment?
Acne scar filler treatments are quick and easy. Most patients don’t require a topical anesthetic, but your injector can supply one if needed. You’ll select the right dermal filler for you based on your goals and needs. Once you’re ready, the filler is placed in the skin using a very fine needle – this is done very carefully and with very small injections in each scar to create a smoother, more even look to the skin. Sometimes, filler treatments can be combined with other skincare treatments to help address redness as well.

Acne Scar Treatment Recovery and Results
After filler treatment, it’s important to follow your specific directions. You may experience some sensitivity, which can be managed with ice packs. Avoid taking blood-thinning medications like ibuprofen since this can cause bruising. You’ll need to avoid exercise, sweating, or hot environments for the first 24-48 hours after treatment, and make sure to wear SPF 30+ daily. Although you’ll see noticeable results right after your session, it can take time for your final results to emerge as the product settles. Depending on your filler, you can enjoy results for as much as 18 months before returning for re-treatment.
