What is an IPL PhotoFacial?
IPL, or Intense Pulsed Light, is a light technology that can reduce pigmented spots on the skin. It works by emitting light energy that is attracted to the pigment in brown spots, red spots, or sun damage (called photoaging). There, it generates heat and damages the cells which eventually die and slough off the skin. It can get rid of unwanted pigmentation without damaging the surrounding skin or requiring extensive downtime.
IPL is one of the most effective ways to treat pigmentation and can achieve a more even, brighter skin tone. It’s actually different from a laser platform and thus comes with fewer risks. It can emit more than one wavelength of light, meaning it can treat various skin conditions at the same time.
What Can IPL Treat?
- Age or sun spots
- Brown spots
- Discoloration
- Freckles
- Rosacea and redness
- Scars
- Melasma
What Happens During Treatment?
You’ll be given some instructions to follow ahead of your treatment, including avoiding tanning or sun exposure for at least 4 weeks ahead of treatment. Additionally, you’ll need to avoid waxing or chemical peels for at least 2 weeks before. These things can impact the effectiveness of your treatment.
Once you’re ready, your skin will be cleansed, and you’ll be given protective eye shields. A gel will be applied to the treatment area to help manage heat buildup. Then, the IPL handpiece will be placed on your skin to administer light energy. This process can feel like a rubber band snapping the skin, but isn’t overly painful. If needed, your laser technician can supply a topical anesthetic.

IPL Recovery and Results
It’s normal to have redness and sensitivity like a sunburn for a few days after treatment. This will begin to fade as your skin recovers. It’s extremely important to wear sunscreen over your treatment area (at least SPF 30). Also, keep the area moisturized and avoid using harsh or scented products.
It’s normal for your treated spots to darken over the next few weeks. This happens because the damaged cells rise to the surface of the skin before sloughing off. Once they’re gone, you’ll be left with brighter, clearer skin.
Most patients benefit from a package of 3-7 treatments for best results with 2-4 weeks in between. During your appointment with your laser technician, you’ll create a customized treatment approach for your skin goals.
